SURFER SCIENTISTS

A LIQUID FUTURE / UNIVERSITY OF BUNG HATTA

This project focuses on working with local communities to position them as independent decision makers regarding the development and conservation of their coastal environment - specifically surf breaks - through upskilling and providing necessary resources.

The project provides technical training and science education undertaken simultaneously with data collection and processing. It is only through genuine community involvement that significant changes can be made to better conserve marine and coastal environments and to develop sustainable livelihoods.

OUR FUTURE WAVES - SURF RESOURCE EDUCATION

A LIQUID FUTURE / THE ASIAN SURFING COOPERATIVE

Working in partnership with The Asian Surfing Cooperative, we are bringing our Our Future Waves - Surf Resource Education Programme to surf clubs across Indonesia.

Using a dynamic and relatable combination of science, creative media, tech and sport, focus areas are; Reef and Coastline Surveys and Monitoring; Water Safety; and The Girls Group. These skills and opportunities are not available elsewhere. Working with surf club leaders, local communities and government, the ASC and ALF see this project equipping local surf clubs and communities with the tools to:

  • Be at the forefront of decision making concerning sustainable management of their surf break

  • Foster sustainable livelihoods through surf tourism

  • Make surfing safer

  • Increase the number of girls and women engaged with the ocean and in The Blue Economy
