Community-engaged surfing programmes for trust-building and ocean conservancy.
Surfing programmes introduce the sport of surfing and also connect students to the ocean environment. They improve physical health, self esteem, confidence, provide an opportunity for girls to come together in a safe and positive space providing a forum for peer support and growth and foster a go-for-it spirit. Carrying out programmes in an open space enables the whole community to join in or observe and enables village elders to see how their community interacts with us, opening channels for honest communication and understanding. This is a critical springboard to our sequential programmes.
Children and adults are able to borrow surf boards from the school during their free time to use in the local breaks. We have a hang out shack at the beach where we share ideas, do beach clean ups, organise local competitions. It is headed up by two local surfers Wells and Aldo.
